The 'Other' Heresies

Mexican photographer Pedro Meyer is as renowned for his powerful and provocative photographs as he is for his pioneering work with digital imaging. Meyer’s photographs consistently test the limits of truth, fiction and reality. With the advent of digital photography in the early 1990s, Meyer evolved from a documentary photographer who created so-called “straight photographs” into a digital-documentarian who often combines photographic elements from disparate times and places to arrive at a different or higher truth. Pedro's oft-expressed contention that all photographs — digitally manipulated or not — are equally “true” and “untrue” has been labeled “heretical” in the orthodox documentary photography community.

While fellow Apple-user Pedro Meyer (one of the first to adopt this platform and launch the very first intearactive CD-ROM!) may have his exhibition - Heresies - opening in 60 museums in almost as many countries (we are thrilled that T2F, where the exhibition opens on 21st October, has been selected as the Pakistani venue).

There are others, like me :), whose photographs have also made it to some of the greatest (virtual!) halls in the world. Here are just 2 of my examples.

"Happy viewing", as the Senator said!
;-)

Nuzhat

Sabeen

See you at the real Heresies, where a selection of large original museum quality prints of Pedro's works will be displayed and changed almost weekly!

Please do keep checking out the schedule at T2F's website for the exciting related events, like workshops, talks, discussions, and presentations during the weeks that this unique exhibition is on, unless you're on FB and already visit T2F Pages for updates.

Oh ... did you know that you can also subscribe to T2F's Events RSS Feed so you get the news automatically? And, as the icing on the cake, sign up for SMS alerts and get timely reminders too. This saves you the task of 'remembering to remember' to go to the website and saves me answering calls - usually when an event is actually happening - Maddy, please note ;-) - about when and what time it's happening.

Renee Nault

I first saw a picture in the bathroom of a friend in USA and copied it with my iPhone. It was quite interesting and I thought I'd make a booklet with it for someone who is an artist in Karachi.

Although it was Renee Nault's image I had copied, her name didn't mean much to me at all … until I had finished reading The Handmaid's Tale and discovered an adaptation done by RN of the book. So I bought that, too. I am awfully fond of Graphic Novels and Adaptations of books into this genre.

And was I thrilled?
YES!!!

Her style is superb and attention to details is amazing.

Fond of Graphic Novels? Get this!

Fond of a Dystopian Novel? Read MA's Book!

Favourite Artists: Dali

The Dali Mustache :)
Salvador Domingo Felipe Jacinto Dalí
Marquis of Dalí de Púbol
Spanish
11 May 1904 – 23 January 1989

Dali was as controversial in life
as are many of his artworks

Dali loved old and new Masters and has mentioned many in his writings and conversations. The best way is to read the long piece in Wikipedia which talks about not just about his art and his life but also the problems he had among frenemies and family.

While extremely fond of several great people in Hollywood, Dali worked with some of them. The Mae West Sofa was his tribute to one of the great stars known for her charms. He also sent Harpo Marx a Christmas present of a Harp with barbed-wire strings. Here is his Mao-Marilyn portrait.

In Hitchcock's Spellbound he did the famous Dream Sequence. He also worked with Walt Disney on Destino - a film that he painted. Dali was part of many videos and films and you can see some of them on YouTube. The famous photographer, Philippe Halsmen, did a video of Dali painting. Here is a BBC recreation.

Here are some of my favourite works. There are many more by Dali that I love … but this will have to be enough to whet your appetite.

The Sacrament of The Last Supper

Figure at the Window

Slave Market with the Disappearing Bust of Voltaire

The Persistence of Memory

Geopoilticus Child Watching the Birth of the New Man

Metamorphosis of Narcissus

Portrait of Picasso

Soft Construction with Boiled Beans: Premonition of Civil War

Autumn Cannibalism

The Great Masturbator

Young Virgin Autos Sodomized By Her Own Chastity

The Ecumenical Council

Head Exploding

Soft Self Portrait With Fried Bacon

Discovery of America with Christopher Columbus

Lincoln in Dalivision
(There's Gala in the middle at a Cross;
If you move further you can see Lincoln)
Sleep

(Shaheen Jaffrani: My Covid Tesselation has this Man hidden in the Beige area)

The Anthropomorphic Cabinet

My Dali Remembered has this image re-done in Photoshop

•

Among the most wonderful things that Dali did
was painting Alice in Wonderland on Glass

•

If you need a book on Dali, there are several around,
from a small price to a heavily large price.

My recommendation would be to start with this.

It is a great start to see what he could do.
Take a look at his eye here.
Do you see something?

Here's a real close-up of it

Still not convinced?

You can see Gala and a Warped Clock!
WOW!!!

In his last few days Dali would make paintings but not sign them. They'd be put up in various shops  were sold there. The buyer would then have to bring the painting to Dali and ask him to sign it in front of themself. A gentleman bought a painting that he had seen Dali paint and took it to the artist. Dali said he won't sign it because it's fake. The buyer said that he had seen Dali paint this. "Oh", said Dali, "but I paint a lot of fake Dali's myself."

BITS Brain by
Artist Mariam Suhail

Rs 25,000

The BITS Brain
Conceived by me as an object where visitors would drop their visiting cards at exhibitions or at our offices, the drawer could be opened to remove the cards and respond to queries or even connect with the people.
This wonderful sculpture was made by a delightful artist who now lives in Bangalore (India). Sabeen Mahmud and I ran the BITS office until Sab’s assassination in 2015. The sculpture had been at the office (plus at a couple of exhibits) and has now been displayed in my house since then. We would like to sell this lovely art piece to someone who likes ‘brains’ or wants to use it in their own office or home.

Haider Ali's First Artwork
after his well known
Truck Painting that thrilled everyone in Pakistan
(and now is Internationally well-known)

This Wheelbarrow was painted by Haider Ali when Sabeen asked him to diversify his work and display it at T2F. He started doing several things from workshops to signboards with truck art designs to cups and kettles. Now everyone seems to copy him but they hardly come close.

I bought this as soon as he displayed it at T2F and have adored it. Not just as a lovely thing that it is … but even more so as a delightful seat where I often read my books.

Rs. 35,000 (Sold: 25/1)

I am so sorry to have to let it go.
I wish there was a space where I could have kept it.
Ughhh!
