Try and google his mathemagic books and puzzles. there are tons of them around. this was one of my favourites ... try it out for a while. There is a simple answer.

In both school and college, I would visit the library, not in search of study books, but to see if the latest SciAm had come in, so I could pore through Gardner's column. It was always a joy when I could fathom the devious workings of his brilliant mind, and solve the puzzles that he laid out like treats.
Incidentally, I always thought this one was a bit of a cheat, rather like a magician's sleight of hand. It is hard to recall which type of puzzle was more challenging, and yet difficulty wasn't the best part of his writing: that was his sheer wit.
